Special Projects
Our Special Projects highlight the most urgent and impactful initiatives currently underway at Straw to Bread. From expanding access to clean water to strengthening healthcare and education in the Nyakach Plateau, these projects are designed to meet real needs and create lasting change. Each one offers a tangible way to get involved and make a direct impact.
Bethlehem Home Academy Secondary School Building
Current Bethlehem Home Academy Primary School Building
We have begun adding secondary school grades to Bethlehem Home Academy. The Kenyan government forces our school to include Grades 10-12. We were able to accommodate our 10th graders within the existing buildings, but additional space is now needed.
We are looking to raise $250,000 to build a senior secondary school, set to open in January 2027.

During our 2024 trip 470 water filters were delivered to 47 villages across the Nyakach Plateau - all in just five days! In each village, coordinators distributed 10 filters based on need and trained neighbors how to use and clean them.
These coordinators then conducted follow-up surveys at 2 weeks, 8 weeks, and 1 year. Their dedication led to a one-year response rate of 95.3%.
Here’s what we learned:
Did the filters work? - YES! At one year, 98% said their filters were working and in good condition - a staggering result made possible by the education and support each coordinator provided.
How many benefited from these filters? - 4,330 people are drinking clean water.
What about diarrheal illnesses? - Before using the filters, 26.8% of people reported acute diarrhea.
We’ve learned so much but there’s still more to do. So, what’s next?
One immediate need is replacement parts for 2% of filter systems that are not currently working.
Distribute more filters to more communities. We are aiming for 1000 filters. Each filter costs $35.

Faith Surgical Center
Bethlehem Home Hospital during 2025 trip
Building a surgical center remains the top priority for this community - for one simple reason: our mamas.
Kenya’s healthcare system is failing. Government insurance is not reimbursing, leaving many rural facilities closed or requiring full payment upfront. For an already vulnerable population, this created dangerous delays in cesarean sections - delays that too often lead to preventable complications for both mothers and babies.
The building is ready. The providers are committed. The patients are waiting.
We pray that 2026 will deliver out fundraising goals, trusting always in His timing.

Back in 2018, Pastor Habil approached Straw to Bread with a problem: our schoolgirls were missing one week of school each month due to their menstrual cycles. Through the “Gracious Girls” project, Straw to Bread collaborated with the Bethlehem Home school teachers, and provided sanitary napkins and health education for the girls in school. Now, girls on the plateau receive the same education as the boys. Let’s empower our girls!!!

Bethlehem Home Printing Solutions
Recent secondary school graduates learning computer skills during their gap year
Members of the Bethlehem Home community lack affordable access to printing, internet-based government services, and digital skills training. At the same time, this opens jobs for students leaving school and awaiting acceptance into higher education.
Bethlehem Home Printing Solutions will be a community-based printing and digital services hub that will:
Provide essential services (printing, ID photos, internet applications)
Create employment opportunities for our recent graduates
Train youth in marketable digital skills
Bring the printing needs of Bethlehem Home Academy to the local community
We are raising $27,000 to set up this business that will make a lasting sustainable impact within the community.
