Annual Straw to Bread team trips to Kenya began in 2009 and continue to the present. Hundreds of college students have traveled with medical doctors and other professionals to work on the Plateau, many going multiple times. In addition to seeing an average of 1000 patients at the Bethlehem Home Hospital during the trip, projects include working in the community gardens and in the school, making visits to elders who cannot leave home, and gathering research data. The team raises money each year to purchase nails, gutters, water tanks, chimneys, medicine, malaria tests, medical and school supplies, gardening tools, goats, chickens, and research supplies. In addition to the team members’ work, the trip activities provide paid work for local translators, construction workers, cooks, and craftspeople.
Each year hope gains a deeper hold.
